“One [thing] have I desired of the LORD, that will I seek after; that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the LORD, and to enquire in his temple.” – Psalm 27:4

All of us have desires and aspirations we would love to see achieved in life. We had goals we set when we were young that have never been accomplished. We still dream of what could be possible in our lives if we would only work hard enough to attain it.

While I believe in and strongly encourage dreaming about our future…I am also reminded that the most important thing in life is not achievement; it is intimacy with God.

David was so clear in our verse today: “One thing” was what he desired. He was not chasing dreams or goals – he was chasing God. The only thing he wanted in life was to be in the presence of God and behold His beauty.

Historians believe that David had a harp hanging above his bed so when the north winds would blow through his bedroom, they would blow across the strings as an ancient alarm clock. David would get up and study the Torah until daybreak in the presence of God.

Reader of this devotion, I have found that rather than seeking opportunities in life…you need to seek God and those opportunities will come to you. So, as the month has come to an end today, make the presence of God your “one thing.”

Even if nothing else on your task list is completed…if you can be in His presence then it will have been a successful day!
