“Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:” – 1 Peter 5:8 (KJV)
Knowing that you can be the devil’s prey puts you on guard to keep him under your feet. The devil is described as an adversary because he has chosen to live in opposition to God and anything that is godly. And as children of God, we are the devil’s enemies, and he is always looking for an opportunity to steal, kill, and destroy us (John 10:10). He comes as a roaring lion to put fear into people and to deceive them into doing his bidding.
Dear beloved, you can become his prey if you don’t apply the principles in the opening scripture.
- First is to be sober, which means to be balanced and self-disciplined, especially with respect to sin; if you are walking in righteousness, you cannot become his prey.
- The second is to be vigilant, that is, to be alert and cautious at all times. You can achieve this when you make the Word of God your daily meditation and arm yourself in prayer (Psalm 1:2, Mark 14:38).
- Third is to resist him steadfastly or firmly by casting him out any time you sense him around (1 Peter 5:9). Remember also to walk in the right company so that you don’t give him the chance to use others to dent your character (1 Corinthians 15:33).
Applying the principles discussed will keep him under your feet and very far from you. Hallelujah! You are an overcomer!
Prayer Point: Dear heavenly Father, thank you for your insightful Word. I have made up my mind to be sober and vigilant and to resist the devil and his demons daily in order to win and to keep them far away from me. Please always prompt me anytime I’m letting down my guard, and I will stay on course, in Jesus’ name. Amen!
