“And if it seem evil unto you to serve the LORD, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that [were] on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.” – Joshua 24:15
Whenever we read this verse, our minds generally go to the false gods of idolatry shaped in statues of animal-like creations. While it is true that the Israelites were guilty at times of erecting false gods that were in a statue form…the reality is that idolatry goes far beyond that.
This verse is given to us not only to avoid a physical representation of a false god but also anything that would in some way distract us from serving God with all our heart.
Money is just as real of a temptation to idolatry as a statue is. Your job can become more important to you than following the call of God on your life.
Sports or entertainment can become an idolatrous distraction from seeking God with all your heart. This is one of the greatest reminders that each of us are surrounded by strong delusions of distraction which would attempt to steal our heart away from who God has called us to be.
May this verse be a reminder that the only thing that matters in life is that we choose to serve God above all. Don’t ever allow the insignificant distractions pull you away from who God has called you to be.
Dear believer, stand up today and pledge your allegiance not to a flag, country, or world system; pledge your allegiance to the one true God who loves you with an everlasting love.
God is simply asking you to choose Him over everything else. Have you made that choice today?
