“Consider and hear me, O Lord my God: lighten mine eyes, lest I sleep the sleep of death; Lest mine enemy say, I have prevailed against him; and those that trouble me rejoice when I am moved.” Psalm 13:3–4 (KJV)

Naturally, God created sleep for mankind to rest. The body uses the period of resting to repair worn out tissue and revitalize the body. Thus, we wake up feeling fresh in the morning and ready to take on the routine of the day. There is another kind of sleep called the sleep of death; when a person dies, he is unable to respond to stimuli no matter how hard he tries. The psalmist was using this phrase metaphorically to refer to Christians who have become so cold that they are unresponsive to the voice of God and the promptings of the Holy Spirit.

Dear beloved, living in sin will lead you into such a realm, so avoid sin and do righteousness (1 Timothy 4:1–3). Pray without ceasing, and ask God to enlighten the eye of your spirit so that you can be spiritually alert to receive from God and to always triumph over your enemies. Hallelujah! Be an overcomer!

Prayer Point: Dear Lord Jesus, enlighten the eye of my understanding to always be awake spiritually, amen.
