“Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ.” – 2 Corinthians 10:5

When you study the context of this verse you discover that Paul the Apostle is refuting those who had come against him as an Apostle in criticism of his humble appearance.

The first 11 verses of this chapter are Paul’s argument as to why he appears and ministers in the way that he does. In my opinion, verse 5 is the highlight of this argument.

Paul is basically telling them: “I refuse to allow anything you say about me to get inside of my head.” The English Standard Version translates it as: “We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God…”

The challenge I take out of this verse is to make the same decision to refuse to allow the lofty opinions of other people to get inside of my head.

The word lofty gives the picture of someone who is arrogant and condescending. They think so much of themselves that they cannot think of anyone else; and therefore, have an opinion that you are not at the same lofty level they are.

These people are not afraid to express their opinion in hopes that what they say will further validate their position in life and eliminate yours. But I encourage you to take Paul’s position when this happens and literally destroy that opinion by locking it up and taking it captive.

What power this verse expresses to us! You have the authority to literally take captive the lofty opinions of others and lock them up, so they no longer have influence over you.

Dear believer, the next time someone comes against who you are and what you do…take Paul’s position of authority and lock it away. Do not let it get inside of your head; because what gets in your head gets in your way of moving toward God’s best over your life!
