“And he said unto them, Take heed, and beware of covetousness: for a man’s life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth.” – Luke 12:15 (KJV)

Covetousness means having or showing a strong desire for especially material possessions. It is an evil desire. No wonder one of the temptations of Jesus Christ involved this evil desire, but He defeated it to the glory of God (Matthew 4:8–10).

Dear beloved, are you covetous? The system of the world keeps promoting money, wealth, fame, power, and pleasure without recourse to the right way of getting them. Sometimes it lures people into thinking that life is all about money, wealth, fame, power, and pleasure. However, Jesus Christ says there is more to life than money, wealth, fame, power, and pleasure.

Life is about being rich toward God and serving Him with your life (Luke 12:21). Beloved, what shall it profit you if you gain the whole world but lose your soul in hell (Mark 8:36–37)? Let us value our lives and dedicate them to Jesus Christ and serve Him, surrendering all our desires to Him in worship. Then we will lay up lots of treasures in heaven. Hallelujah! Be an overcomer!

Prayer: Dear heavenly Father, thank you for warning me against covetousness from your Word. I apply this to my life and guard myself against covetousness. Please give me godly desires in order to live a life that is pleasing to you, in Jesus’ name. Amen!
